Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs for Service Users
How can I receive this treatment?
Unfortunately this treatment is not yet widely available, as we are still in the early stages of determining how effective the transdiagnostic treatment is compared to treatment-as-usual within the NHS. We are currently only recruiting from the waitlists of two psychological services in Cambridge.
How is this treatment different from CBT?
This treatment is similar in its approach and contains many techniques based on CBT and associated therapies (e.g., Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Behavioural Activation). The main difference is the way in which treatment is delivered, as the modules can be delivered flexibly based on a formulation (or map) of an individual’s top problems and goals.
I have been approached to take part in the trial, what do I do next?
If you have received an invitation to take part in the trial please use the contact details on the letter to get in contact with a member of the team. Please have a look at the information on this website and let us know if you have any questions.
If you are receiving the Transdiagnostic intervention please have a look at the information on this website and speak to your clinician about any questions you may have. You will discuss the treatment with your clinician in greater detail throughout your treatment.
How long does the treatment take?
The length of treatment varies depending on your concerns and the modules chosen, but generally takes 15 to 20 weekly sessions.

FAQs for Clinicians
When can I get my hands on the treatment manual?
We are currently working with an initial version of the treatment manual in the feasibility trial, and will be developing the content based on the results of the trial and feedback from clients and therapists. The plan is to disseminate the transdiagnostic approach through workshops and a published treatment manual following the completion of a full-scale randomised controlled trial, and a demonstration that the transdiagnostic treatment is effective for mood and anxiety disorders (but this is likely to be some years in the future).
Isn’t this what clinical psychologists do anyway?
Yes! Many clinicians already integrate evidence-based therapies and use a formulation to guide their work with clients. The aim of the HARMONIC trial is to capture this process within a manualised approach to allow a wider dissemination of transdiagnostic and transtheoretical approaches to the treatment of mental disorders.
How long does the treatment take?
The length of treatment varies depending on the patient’s concerns and the modules chosen, but generally takes 15 to 20 weekly sessions.
Can I get involved in the trial?
As this is a feasibility trial we currently have a small team of clinicians and don’t have the capacity to expand our team. However as the trial progresses we hope to seek input from clinicians on the treatment approach and in the future involve more clinicians in a full scale randomised control trial.
Can I refer patients to the trial?
Unfortunately this treatment is not yet widely available, as we are still in the early stages of determining how effective the transdiagnostic treatment is compared to treatment-as-usual within the NHS. We are currently only recruiting from the waitlists of two psychological services in Cambridge.
